Dogs fall to Wildcats in football opener
By Mike BergerThe CHS football team did not perform well in its first game of the season, as Weston’s Wildcats dominated the Bulldogs 35-7 Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats raced to a 28-0 halftime lead, while Canton’s only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter when Anthony LaRose scored on a five-yard run on a drive set up by quarterback Joshua Matt to Elias Camacho for a 35-yard pass-and-run play. The Bulldogs had scoring chances in the second and third quarters set up by the running of Jon Vaughn and LaRose, but the drives stalled deep into Weston territory.
Defensively, the Bulldogs had some good individual plays, but they could not stop the inside running of Weston’s Greg Cohen, who topped 100 yards. The Wildcats did not pass much, but when they did their receivers were wide open.
“We did show some fight in the second half,” CHS coach Jim Goff said, “but we were outplayed in all areas in the first half.”
The Canton defense did stop Weston on the first set of downs, but the Wildcats thrilled their fans with a fake punt and run that gave them a new first down at Canton’s 42-yard line. Six plays later Weston scored on a five-yard run by Cohen with six minutes left in the first quarter. The big play was a 21-yard screen pass on a third and seven, which set up the Wildcat offense with a new first down at Canton’s six-yard line. The Bulldogs failed to move the ball on the ensuing possession and then its punt was blocked, with Weston recovering at the Bulldog 18. Weston quickly marched down near the goal line, and Jarrett Rowe scored on a quarterback keeper. Weston led 14-0 near the end of the first quarter.
Canton finally showed some offensive life in the second quarter with a few rushing first downs by Justin Saccone and Vaughn. The Bulldogs marched down to Weston’s 19 before fumbling the ball and allowing Weston to take over on its 20-yard line. Rowe kept the ball on a quarterback keeper and ran 50 yards to the Canton 34. Two plays later Cohen scored on a wide open 28-yard run, charging untouched into the end zone with 5:37 left in the half and Weston dominating 20-0. Weston added one more touchdown before the half, mounting a drive from its own 48 yard line, climaxed by a six-yard touchdown catch. Canton controlled play in the third quarter, marching down the field to the Weston 15-yard line before fumbling the ball.
Leading tacklers for Canton included Matt McLaughlin with ten tackles; Brandyn Sparks, Anthony Bires and Ryan Conrad each with five; and Devin Costa and Logan Cerruti with four. Canton will face Quincy at 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at Veterans Memorial Field in Quincy.
