CHS girls’ cross country team starts season with 44 runners

The CHS girls’ cross country team started the season with a seventh-place finish in the Hockomock League Jamboree, followed by a fifth-place finish out of 12 teams in the Martha’s Vineyard Invitational.

Sophomore Kelsey Sayers was Canton’s top runner at the Vineyard meet, as she finished 15th out of 100 runners to earn a medal. Junior Mairead Bagley was Canton’s second fastest runner.

Coach Peter Boucher said he expects competition for Canton’s top runner to be sharp this year, with Sayers, sophomore Eleni Papadopoulos, Bagley and Alyse Bronstein in the mix and senior co-captains Sara Teague, Kate D’Orazio and Jenny Sidney all capable of finishing at the top in any given meet. Boucher said sophomore Kate McClintock has also impressed in the early going.

“We have a potentially very talented team, which I think will be much stronger by the end of the season,” Boucher said.

The team’s 44-member roster is made up of 15 freshmen, 12 sophomores, 12 juniors, and five seniors.

The team was scheduled to kick off the regular season with a home meet against Foxboro on Tuesday, followed with an away meet against Sharon on Tuesday, September 21, at 3:45 p.m.
