CHS Sports Roundup: Volleyball team keeps rolling

Juniors Elizabeth Hamilton and Rye Verille are two of the many bright spots on this year’s volleyball team.
The wins keep piling up for the red-hot Canton High volleyball team, which improved to 7-0 in league play and a perfect 8-0 overall with another straight-set victory last week against Stoughton at home (25-17, 25-11, 25-17). Once again, it was a total-team effort, led by Chidera Nwankwo and Kim Frazier, who combined for 12 kills and hit well over .500, and senior captain Danielle Arthur, who played excellent defense. Fellow senior captain Erin Proctor also had a strong overall performance with 17 assists, two kills, and three aces, while sophomores Emma Murphy, Julia Panico, and Nicole Poole all made the most of their extended playing time. The first-place Bulldogs have now won 21 sets in a row against Hockomock League opponents, with a pair of road matches scheduled for this week against Sharon and Attleboro. The girls’ next home match is Monday, October 6, against rival Franklin.
Football team earns No. 1 ranking in D4 South
The Canton High football team was off last week on a bye, but their impressive results through the first three games of the season have garnered the attention of the MIAA, which named the Bulldogs No. 1 in all of Division 4 South in its Week 3 Power Rankings. The rankings are based on a formula that takes into account strength of opponents and margin of victory. Canton had a rating of 14.33, which bested all others in the 16-team field. Scituate was next at 13.50, followed by Holliston (13.00) and Apponequet (11.67). The Bulldogs will look to stay unbeaten when they travel to Milford tonight for a 7 p.m. start. The team then hosts rival Stoughton on Friday, October 10.
Field hockey team gets back on winning track
After opening with a .500 record through the first six games of the season, the CHS varsity field hockey team appears to have a turned a corner as of late, earning consecutive shutout victories over Stoughton and Sharon to improve to 4-2-2 overall.
The Stoughton win last Monday was Canton’s most lopsided of the year, as the Bulldogs combined a balanced scoring effort with a strong defense to overwhelm the Black Knights 6-0 at home. Six different players found the back of the net in the win: Caroline Hagan, Mary McNeil, Julianne Howlett, Lindsey Nolte, Jackie Martin, and Abby Powers. The Bulldogs then followed up that victory with another solid effort against Sharon, winning 2-0 on the road earlier this week. Nolte and Hagan finished with one goal apiece, and Martin, one of the team’s top defenders, did a nice job at center midfield in place of Mary McNeil, who sat out to rest a minor injury. Freshmen Andrea McNeil and Selena Cho also saw some action against the Eagles, and junior Colleen Phelan had another strong game defensively. The Bulldogs had another road game on Wednesday against Attleboro and will host Milford tonight at 6 p.m.
