Last weekend was the CHS boys’ indoor track team’s time to shine as the Chris Elgar-coached team finished in a tie for third among 38 teams in the Division 3 Indoor Track Championships, held February 19 at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.

The Bulldogs were sparked by the first-place finishes of seniors Jon Vaughn in the 55-meter hurdles and Matt Sidney in the high jump. Sidney came within one inch of the D3 meet record with a jump of six feet, six inches, and Vaughn came close to breaking the record with a best time of 7.79 seconds. The meet record is 7.6 seconds, and Vaughn clearly was on his game Saturday as he placed first in the preliminaries with a best time of 7.86 seconds. Both Sidney and Vaughn will go on to the All States this coming weekend.

Senior Chris Boughter also had a good day as he placed 14th in the 300 with a time of 38.15 seconds and tied for seventh in the high jump with a six-foot jump.

Boughter also ran the opening leg of the 4×400 relay, which finished fifth overall in 3:35.5. Other relay members included junior Cam Huber, senior Tom Kerikas, and sophomore Obi Nwankwo. Huber also had an impressive performance in the 600, finishing in seventh with a time of 1:25.8.

The 4×800 relay team finished 11th at 9:00.84 behind seniors Mike and Rob Bronstein, Chris Haidul, and junior Jake Fruci.

The girls’ team also did well on Saturday, placing 23rd out of 35 teams.

The highest finisher for Canton, who will also go on to the All-State meet, was senior Chidimma Nwankwo, who finished fourth in the shot put with a best throw of 35 feet, 6.75 inches.

Other Canton placements included sophomore Mellyn Costello, 16th, 55-meter hurdles, 9.66 seconds; senior Radiya Buchanan, 22nd, 300, 45.09 seconds; senior Kate D’Orazio, 22nd, 600, 1:48.05; and Buchanan, 16th, high jump, 4’10”.

The girls’ team also sent two relay teams. The 4×200 team finished 20th behind senior Stephanie Mui and three freshmen: Emily Cody, Lexie MacQuarrie, and Jackie Merrigan. The 4×400 relay team finished 15th at 4:23.5 behind Buchanan, senior Mairead Bagley, Costello, and D’Orazio.

Two other members who qualified for the state meet but did not attend Saturday’s meet included junior Vicky Tondre in the 55-meter dash and long jump and senior Anna Amico in the 55-meter dash. Both were among the Bulldogs’ top performers throughout the season and at the league meet.

According to girls’ head coach Ben Mattson, who was proud of his team’s accomplishments at the divisional meet, Tondre, Costello, and Buchanan will be participating in the State Pentathlon on March 1 at the Reggie Lewis Center.
