Fire chief pleased with emergency volunteer response
By Canton CitizenCanton Fire Chief Charlie Doody, who also serves as the town’s emergency management director, said he has received a great public response to his request for emergency volunteers. A month ago, Doody issued a call for 50 volunteers to serve as part of the town’s Emergency Management Response Team, and as of December 19, he had filled all 50 spots.
The first training will be held on Sunday, January 4, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Canton High School gym. Doody said he will review some basic shelter operations, unload the shelter operations trailer so all volunteers can see what equipment is available, and set up a portion of the gym to see what an emergency shelter will look like. Doody said all volunteers must sign a CORI form and the Emergency Management Agency will be issuing a photo ID. Volunteers will also be fitted for an official gold shirt.
Doody recently received a $10,000 state grant to train volunteers in the areas of security, communications, first aid, and shelter operations. The goal of the volunteer team is to augment the efforts of the emergency team during weather emergencies and natural disasters. After completion of the training courses, volunteers will receive an emergency supply kit and a uniform.
