Canton High swimmers prepping for sectionals

Coming off a strong league meet, members of the CHS boys and girls swim teams are now preparing for the sectional championships on Saturday, February 7, at Boston University for the boys and Sunday, February 8, at Wellesley College for the girls.

Qualifying swimmers for the girls team include Kim Frazier, Julia Guerini, Emilee Mercuri, Amanda Walsh, and Tiffany Ha in the relays, and Walsh, Ha, and Guerini in the individual events.

For the boys team, Sebastian Melendez, Sean Mitchell, Diego Ferstler, and Owen Guerini have qualified for the relays while Melendez, Mitchell and Guerini have qualified for the individual events.

In last weekend’s Hockomock championship meet, both Canton teams placed eighth while producing several notable relay and individual achievements.

Melendez captured two individual titles, winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle events with respective times of 1:46:08 and 4:46.8.

“He joined our team this year in his second year and has proved to be a very valuable point scorer, team member and a crucial part of many relay teams,” said head coach Lori Mooney.

Other top performers for the boys included Owen Guerini, who placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.74), and Mitchell, who placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Ferstler had a top ten finish in the 100 freestyle, while Dan Nadeau placed tenth in both the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.

Several swimmers also posted personal best times, including Steven Hellmuth, who brought his time down in the 200 freestyle by seven seconds, and Chris Milne, who posted best times in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

In the boys relay events, the 400 freestyle team of Mitchell, Nadeau, Guerini and Melendez placed fourth with a best time of 3:40.13, and the 200 free team of Kevin Wing, Milne, Nadeau, and Ferstler finished eighth with a personal-best 1:47.48.

Two of the boys IM relays also bested their seed times, with Diep, Mike Larson, Wing, and Caleb Casmir posting a 2:18.81 and Brian McCarthy, Brian Regan, Jimmy Hamrock and Hellmuth finishing in 2:27.12.

For the girls team, Ha had a great day at the league meet, placing third in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke with impressive times of 1:04.14 and 1:14.87.

Walsh placed fourth and qualified for sectionals in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:12.27, and Guerini placed eighth in the 50 free in 28.24. Walsh and Guerini also competed in the 500 free and placed ninth and 13th, respectively.

Other notable performers included Frazier in the 100 breaststroke and 100 free, Mercuri in the 100 breaststroke and 100 fly, and freshman Brianna Mitchell in the 100 backstroke.

Several swimmers also posted personal bests, including Piper Conway in the 200 free; Emily Pham, Nicole Conway, Alexa Crossen, Hayley Rosenblatt, Izzabella Bankowski, and Siobhan Kelly in the 50 free; Ericka Feeney in the 100 fly; and Jen Arthur, Nicole Conway, Crossen and Bankowski in the 100 free.

In the girls relays, the 200 IM team of Ha, Mercuri, Guerini, and Frazier placed seventh in 2:05.88 while the team of Siobhan McKenna, Meryl Prendergast, Feeney, and Aoife O’Mahony improved their time by seven seconds.

Canton also had three strong relays in the 200 freestyle, led by the sixth-place team of Ha, Mercuri, Frazier, and Guerini (1:58.30). The second relay team of Walsh, Emily Beatty, Kelsey Irons and Dasol Lee placed 15th with a time of 2:01.60, and the third relay came in right after behind Prendergast, O’Mahony, Emily Pham, and Piper Conway.
