News Notes: Weekly Substance Abuse Report

The Canton Police and Fire departments responded to one drug overdose in Canton last week. EMS coordinator Jamie Meier said that Narcan was not administered; however, the patient did admit to using heroin.

In other substance abuse news, Selectman Bob Burr told the Citizen last week that the board will review a suggestion to require a coaching representative to attend a substance abuse information session before September and in time for the fall youth sports practices. He noted that it was not his idea but instead came from longtime American Legion baseball coach Al Jackson, who attended a Canton Substance Abuse Coalition meeting with Burr and is concerned for the safety of young adults.

Burr said if the youth coaching information session idea works, it will extend to all adult teams that use Canton fields, including the Legion and Canton A’s baseball teams and the adult softball teams.

One injured in stove fire

One resident was injured in a stove fire on Waterfall Drive on Sunday, July 19, around 6 p.m. The unidentified resident was taken to Norwood Hospital for treatment. Firefighters used a dry chemical agent to put out the flames and opened up the wall to make sure that the fire did not spread.

Firefighters were also called to 124 Turnpike Street to put out a six-wheel dumpster truck fire caused by brake problems. The incident occurred on Friday, July 17, around 6:45 p.m. No injuries were reported. In another call, firefighters shut down a gas stove and ventilated a house on Mulberry Lane after residents complained about a gas odor.

Arrest made after utility pole collision

Police made an arrest after a motorist struck a utility pole near the police station and then abandoned the car on Saturday, July 18, around 2 a.m. An 18-year-old Canton man was charged with leaving the scene of property damage, possession of an open container of liquor in a motor vehicle, and possession of liquor under 21 years old. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said keys were left in the ignition.

Police ran the license plate and found the suspect at his residence. The pole was knocked down and wires were in the street. Police and Fire officials secured the scene until utility repair crews arrived.
