Shame on governor for stance on refugees
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
I am writing to express my dismay at Governor Baker’s decision to not allow Syrian refugees into Massachusetts. Of course, no governor has the authority to turn away refugees so this is just political grandstanding at its worst. Score one for the terrorists — they have succeeded in their mission to instill fear in our hearts!
Whenever there is a terrorist event, we seem to hysterically overreact. Politicians all declare that “keeping us safe” is the great priority. At the same time, there were 336 mass shootings in this country in 2014, killing 375 and wounding 1,205 and the response to these is to merely shrug our shoulders and chalk it up to the price we pay for living in a free society. (For more information, visit massshootings.com.)
Meanwhile the people of Syria are the real victims of terrorism. Does the fact that they are not Americans make their suffering unimportant? As it is, this country has not accepted anywhere near its share of Syrian refugees. Let’s have a little courage and a little heart. Let Governor Baker know that we are better than that!
