Girls’ hockey season ends with tourney loss to Duxbury

By

Tenth seeded Canton beat out seventh seeded Wellesley 6-4 in an exciting back-and-forth game at the beginning of the week before the Bulldogs fell 7-0 to Duxbury to end the team’s two-game postseason stint.

Canton started off the game against Wellesley with a quick lead off a goal by Meaghan McKenna, but the Raiders managed to bounce back to finish the first period with a 2-1 lead. Coach Kelly Rider said the girls were not deterred, however, and managed to score two more goals in the second period — one each from McKenna and Michelle McNeil — while Wellesley scored one goal to tie the game at 3-3.

McKenna netted another goal in the third period to round out her hat trick on the night. The score, however, remained tied 4-4 until Casey Considine scored with 3:42 left in the game. She netted a second goal with 2:39 remaining to cement the Bulldogs’ lead.

The girls did not have as much luck finding the back of the net in Sunday’s game against Duxbury. Despite losing 7-0, Canton outshot Duxbury 30-27.

“The girls never gave up even to the last second,” Rider said. “I’m proud of them giving their all and learning how to push through adversity all year.”

Rider said it’s always hard when a season comes to an end, especially with a group of talented and dedicated seniors. She added that the Bulldogs have a lot to be proud of: “They proved they can be successfully competitive with the top teams, improve as players, and mature as young ladies.”
