Bulldog football kicks off with Billy Cravens Night

The CHS football team will hold a special pre-game ceremony before Friday night’s season opener against Pentucket Regional High School to honor the memory of the late Billy Cravens Jr.

The third annual Billy Cravens Night will raise money for ALS Family Charitable Foundation of Bourne. A 50/50 raffle will be held before the game and a special ceremony will precede the 7 p.m. start at Memorial Field.
Cravens, who worked for the Canton Recreation Department, passed away in 2014 due to complications from ALS — a progressive neurodegenerative disease for which there is no known cure. He was 56 years old.
A 1976 CHS graduate, Cravens was a standout halfback for the Bulldogs, earning numerous accolades during his four years with the team and ultimately a scholarship to Elon College. He is considered one of the greatest football players to ever come out of Canton High School and was beloved throughout the town, according to current CHS head coach Dave Bohane, himself a Canton native and friend of Cravens.
Billy Cravens Night was held the last two years during the final CHS preseason scrimmage but was moved this year to the first regular season home game. “It’s great that the town has a game every year in honor of Billy,” said Rosey Cravens, his wife.
Kim Cravens, Billy’s sister, will deliver a special message and biography of Billy before the game and Kim’s daughter, Jamie Piro, will sing the National Anthem. Rosey will conduct the annual coin toss before the start of the game.
