Born in Trenton, NJ, she was the daughter of Norman and Jean Lurvey Green. Wife of the late Titus W. Trupe, deceased in 2011, and Robert Barclay, MD, deceased 1965, she was the devoted mother of Mary Ann (Mandy) Bass, MS, RN, and her husband, Jeffrey Bass, MD, of Newton; Alison Kiss, BA, of Wilmington, DE; Amy Trupe-Lou, MS, and her husband, Hong Lou, MS, of Lexington; and Sara Cloherty, Esq, and her husband, John Cloherty, Esq, of Canton. She was the cherished grandmother of Lauren, Rachel, and Caroline Bass, J. Douglas, Jacob, and J. Alex Kiss, Natalie and Vivian Lou, and Marie and Joseph Cloherty.
Mary Ann was a 1960 English major graduate of Houghton College and received certification in French and Spanish from Millersville University. She taught both elementary and senior high school classes and served as English chairwoman at Lancaster, PA Catholic High School 1991-2005. Fostering excellence in writing for her students and dedicating much of her time to that cause, in 2001 she was the recipient of the Gold Apple, a National Scholastics Award for the excellence in the teaching of writing. Her Shakespearean work in drama with “Willie on Wheels” received public attention both locally and in a national publication, The Teachers of English Journal.
While other interests included reading, traveling, and gardening, Mary Ann served as a member and branch president of the American Association of University Women in Elmira, NY; youth director and Sunday School teacher; Girl Scout leader; and member of the Lancaster Literary Guild. After retirement in 2005, she moved to Canton, where she dedicated her efforts by teaching ESL. In the annual, town-wide “Canton Writes” event, Mary Ann served as judge of the local poetry. Her name is listed in Who’s Who of American Women.
She was predeceased by her brothers Norman L., Robert M., and George W. Green, and is survived by her sister Suzanne Kolacz of Englishtown, NJ.
