Momentum building for Topgolf project

With unanimous approval from selectmen, the Planning Board, and the Finance Committee, Topgolf is expected to go into the May 14 town meeting with plenty of momentum behind its effort to rezone and develop the former Cumberland Farms site on Dedham Street.

The zoning amendment, submitted by the selectmen, would establish a new Limited Industrial C District and allow for the construction of an indoor/outdoor golf entertainment facility.

The site at 777 Dedham Street has been designated for priority development by the town but has remained vacant since Cumberland Farms relocated its headquarters to Framingham in 2009.

Attorney Tim Sullivan, representing Topgolf, said the Dallas-based company builds and operates premier golf entertainment complexes which include a driving range and related teaching facilities as well as an indoor and outdoor café/bar and grill. There are currently more than 30 Topgolf locations in operation nationwide, although Canton would be the first in the six-state New England region.

Speaking to selectmen Tuesday night, Sullivan said the project would benefit the town economically through increased property tax revenues, local meals taxes, and employment opportunities for residents.

Sullivan described Topgolf as an excellent corporate neighbor, noting that the company would host fundraiser events for local groups and “give back to the community” in other ways.

Selectmen Chairman John Connolly said he has heard “nothing but positives” about the project since hearing the initial pitch. Selectman Kevin Feeney said the project has the potential to take a blighted site and turn it into an important community asset.

Sullivan said the project could be ready within 16 to 18 months following town meeting approval. The developer would also have to secure a special permit from the zoning board; however, the process would be expedited due to the property’s status as a Chapter 43D Priority Development Site …
