CABI Lunch & Learn workshop explores I-95 project

On April 26, the Canton Association of Business & Industry held a Lunch and Learn workshop about the new I-95 bridge and northbound ramp being constructed on Dedham Street. Representatives from local businesses, CABI members, town officials, representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and guests participated in the event, hosted by Reiser at its 725 Dedham Street facility. CABI President Brian Mahoney and Reiser’s Vice President of Strategic Business Development, John McIsaac, welcomed the group.
SPS New England, a leading highway transit contractor, is serving as the general contractor for the project. William Czerepak, a project executive with SPS New England, led the presentation about the $44.3 million project. It aims to improve access to the 128 corridor and University Station development, reduce cut-through traffic on residential streets, increase safety for bicyclists, pedestrians and vehicles, and improve pedestrian access. The presentation included several maps highlighting changes and showcasing before and after images. Czerepak and others involved with the project answered questions about the impact different phases of the work are expected to have on local businesses and others who travel on Dedham Street.
Czerepak said the biggest part of the project will be extensive utilities work because they will be put into an underground configuration. The project is slated for completion in May 2022 and unlikely to wrap up sooner, Czerepek said.
CABI is working with MassDOT representatives on a process to inform area businesses on project updates and expected changes in road statuses that may impact them. CABI Executive Director Paul Hannigan said the association had set up similar updates for businesses along Route 138 for a major project there. He said the increased communication was helpful and very much appreciated.
At the conclusion of the event, McIsaac invited attendees to tour Reiser’s new state-of-the-art facility, where roughly 90 employees are based. Another 200 employees are located across the country. Reiser supplies the food industry with processing and packaging equipment. Features of the new facility are vital to the company’s ability to efficiently get parts needed to service 12,000 machines located throughout North America. McIsaac demonstrated a massive moveable storage system of floor-to-ceiling shelving units that shift with the press of a button. According to McIsaac, thoughtful design enabled them to fit 40 percent more machine parts into the building.
