News Notes: Reservoir Pond dam repairs underway

The Reservoir Pond dam improvement project began on Tuesday, September 4, with the mobilization of the contractor to the Pleasant Street site and the lowering of the water level in the pond. The water will be released in a controlled manner, and DPW engineers will monitor the weather forecast and adjust flow rates as needed. The stream will be periodically monitored and measured against current conditions. During the construction period, Pleasant Street from Washington to Sherman streets will be closed to through traffic; however, school buses will continue to have access to student delivery routes and to the Luce Elementary School. Firefighters respond to gasoline spill

On Tuesday, August 28, at 2:30 p.m., the Canton Fire Department responded to a call for a gasoline spill on Washington Street in the vicinity of Wildwood Drive. Engine 3 arrived to find a gas tank from a Ford pickup truck in the middle of the road. The tank contained approximately 30 gallons of gas, which spilled onto the roadway. The road was temporarily and traffic was rerouted through the Wildwood Drive neighborhood while the spill was contained and cleaned up. The EPA and DEP were both notified of the spill.

For the week of August 27 to September 2, the CFD responded to 86 calls for service, including one opioid-related call. The victim, a 54-year-old female, was successfully treated with Narcan. Canton EMS Coordinator Kevin Hurley said the department has responded to 18 overdose calls since January 1 — an average of two per month.

Fire, Police to host 9/11 remembrance ceremony

Both the Canton Fire and Police departments will hold a remembrance ceremony to honor the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Tuesday, September 11, at 10 a.m. outside Canton Fire headquarters at 99 Revere Street. This year marks the 17th anniversary of the deadly attacks, which killed 2,977 people, including 412 emergency workers in New York City.
