Midterm elections set for Tuesday, November 6
By Jay TurnerA contested U.S. Senate seat, several statewide races, and a trio of intriguing ballot questions will all be up for grabs when Canton voters head to the polls for the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 6.
Headlining this year’s ballot are two big-name incumbents, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker (R), who both enter the final week of the campaign with sizable leads in the polls. Warren, a vocal critic of President Trump and a potential Democratic presidential hopeful in 2020, will look to fend off a challenge from Republican Geoff Diehl, a state Representative from Whitman, and Independent Shiva Ayyadurai, a scientist and entrepreneur.
In the governor’s race, Baker, who continues to poll as the most popular governor in the nation according to a recent quarterly survey, will square off against Democratic challenger Jay Gonzalez of Needham, a former cabinet member in the Deval Patrick Administration.
In the race for attorney general, incumbent AG Maura Healey (D) will run for a second term against Bourne attorney James McMahon III (R), and in the race for secretary of state, 20-year incumbent William F. Galvin (D) will look to stave off challenges from Swampscott Republican Anthony Amore, longtime security chief at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Holyoke community activist Juan Sanchez (Green-Rainbow).
Another incumbent, state treasurer Deborah Goldberg (D), is also running for reelection against two challengers: Republican Keiko Orrall, a state representative from Lakeville, and Green-Rainbow candidate Jamie Guerin of Northampton. In the race for state auditor, Democratic incumbent Suzanne Bump will vie for a third term against three challengers: Libertarian Daniel Fishman, who recently received the endorsement of the Boston Globe; Republican Helen Brady, an executive at the Boston Pops; and Green-Rainbow candidate Edward Stamas, a former school teacher and longtime activist.
In addition to the incumbents in contested races, this year’s ballot features a number of veteran candidates running unopposed for reelection, including Congressman Stephen Lynch, who is seeking a ninth consecutive term in the U.S. House of Representatives; state Rep. Bill Galvin (D-Canton), who is running for a 15th term in the Sixth Norfolk District, and state Senator Walter Timilty (D-Milton), who is seeking his second term in the Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth District. Timilty’s father, Walter F. Sr., is running unopposed for Norfolk County clerk of courts, and his cousin James E. Timilty is running unopposed to fill the county treasurer vacancy. Other unopposed candidates include incumbents Michael Morrissey for Norfolk district attorney, William O’Donnell for Norfolk register of deeds, and Robert Jubinville for governor’s councillor in the Second District.
Tuesday’s election will also feature three ballot questions, including two initiative petitions and one referendum on an existing law. Question 1 would establish patient assignment limits for registered nurses in hospitals and certain other health care facilities. Question 2 would create a citizens commission to advocate for a constitutional amendment that would limit the influence of money in elections and establish that corporations do not have the same rights as human beings. Question 3 asks whether voters approve of a 2016 law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity in places of public accommodation.
