Softball team tops Latin Academy for season’s 1st win

By

After a difficult 5-0 loss to Foxboro, the Canton High School varsity softball team rebounded last week with an impressive 6-0 win against Boston Latin Academy — the team’s first of the young season.

Head coach Ed Amico said the girls’ performance against Foxboro was hampered by popups and a number of errors, two areas the team improved upon in the game against Latin Academy. Additionally, the players have had to be flexible and try out new positions to fill in the gaps due to injuries in the first week of play.

Staff ace and team captain Olivia Kenyon was dominant against BLA, throwing seven innings of four-hit, shutout ball, while Julia Murphy led the Bulldogs’ offensive effort with a homerun, two runs scored and two RBIs. Kenyon, Cady Kelly, Becky Lazaro and Devin McKay each scored one run. Additional RBIs came from Sam Sullivan and Andrea Tamasi, a freshman who was just called up from the junior varsity team and knocked in a run on her first at bat as a varsity player.

Amico said he hopes the win will instill the confidence necessary to perform well over the next few games. This week, the girls were scheduled to play two crucial games against North Attleboro and Dedham. The Bulldogs faced Dedham the first game of the season and lost in a 9-0 shutout.

“Dedham is a good, top-ranked team,” Amico said. “But we are a different team, even just four games into the season. Hopefully, those changes will show in the field.”
