Canton’s Beverly Beckham sings for Mass Down Syndrome Congress

A sold-out crowd gathered at Scullers Jazz Club on Tuesday, April 12, for the fourth annual Stars Over Boston event. The Alliance for Women in Media’s (AWM) Boston chapter hosted the show, challenging local singers to an Idol-style sing-off.

The star-studded panel of judges included Joyce Kulhawik, Tom Doyle, Candy O’Terry, and Hank Morse, who joined host Liz Brunner on the stage to announce the finalists.

Boston Globe columnist and Canton resident Beverly Beckham, accompanied by pianist John O’Neil, performed “The Voice,” an original tune by local songwriter Krisanthi Pappas. And though she did not win the competition or the $500 prize for her favorite charity, the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC), Beckham said she entered the competition not only because she likes to sing, but because it is a challenge to do something you don’t excel at, “and that’s the kind of challenge people with Down syndrome face every day.”

“Whenever someone brings the subject of Down syndrome into the limelight,” said MDSC Executive Director Maureen Gallagher, “it’s a positive thing. We are grateful to Beverly for her continued efforts.”
