Lisa Lopez announces candidacy for BOS

By

Lisa Lopez has announced her candidacy for the two-year vacancy on the Board of Selectmen, which will be filled at the next regular town election on Tuesday, April 2.

Lopez, a 35-year Canton resident and retired executive after a 25-year career with Braintree-based Haemonetics Corporation, has long been involved in serving the community but has never before run for elective office.

“I know I am an unconventional candidate,” she said. “My three children and a demanding job prevented that. But now in retirement, I’d like to dedicate even more time and effort to the community I call home.”

Lopez is no stranger to hard work and learning new things. She began her career at Haemonetics in charge of legal affairs and human resources. Over the years, though she remained the worldwide chief legal officer of this public company, she was promoted to roles that included management of regulatory & clinical affairs, quality, external affairs, occupational health, internal audit, investor relations and corporate social responsibility. After retiring, she has served as a director of the Boston-based fintech Radius Bank and chairs the board’s Compensation Committee. She also volunteers as an immigration attorney for unaccompanied children and continued her role on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Boston’s Cathedral High School, serving mostly first generation college-bound urban youth, financed predominantly through private philanthropy.

Lopez was part of the team instrumental in securing Canton’s 2012 passage of the Community Preservation Act (CPA) and then assumed the role as chair of the town’s first Community Preservation Committee. Under her leadership, town meeting has agreed to the committee’s recommendations for funding over $3 million of projects that preserve and enhance Canton’s sense of community, including new tennis courts and playgrounds, restoration projects at Canton’s historic public cemeteries, necessary safety upgrades to 172 community housing units, and preservation of historic structures and artifacts.

A signature CPA project has been the transformation of the blighted 40 acres sitting for decades at the bankrupted Plymouth Rubber factory site on Revere Street into the soon to be opened Revere Heritage Site park, with picnic areas and walking trails along Mill Pond and the diversion channel, and the conversion of the Paul Revere Company’s historic structures on the site into a destination restaurant and, eventually, a museum and cultural center. Currently, in addition to continuing to serve on the Community Preservation Committee, Lopez chairs the Open Space Committee of the Revere Heritage Commission, contributing to the landscape design, rules and regulations, and amenities in the future park.

Lopez received her bachelor’s degree from the Ohio State University and her JD from Yale Law School. She is married to Victor Del Vecchio and has three grown children, Alexis, Nick and Dana, as well as a new grandson, Nico.

A ‘Meet the Candidate’ campaign kickoff and fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, February 13, from 5-8 p.m. at the Waterfall Bar & Grille, 643 Washington Street, Canton. The public is invited. Those not able to attend who would like to support Lisa may contact the campaign at 781-821-0628 or send a check to the Committee to Elect Lisa Lopez, care of Deb Sundin, Treasurer, 673 Sherman Street, Canton.
