Jim Quigley to run for Board of Selectmen

Jim Quigley has announced his intention to run for the two-year vacancy on the Board of Selectmen. The election is to be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.

Quigley, a lifelong resident of Canton, is a retired Canton police officer who served for over 30 years. This will be his first candidacy for an elective office. He is a member of the Reservoir Pond Advisory Committee and a past member of the Health Insurance Advisory Board.

When asked why he chose to run at this time, he said, “The town has always treated me well and this is an opportunity to serve the community in a new and challenging way. I now have the time and still have the energy to bring a new perspective to the board. Canton has always been my home and I think I have made a difference and want to continue to do so.”

First appointed a permanent intermittent police officer in 1980, Quigley began full-time police work in 1986. After working as a patrol officer for several years he was assigned to the Detective Bureau, working on several high-profile cases. In 1998, he was promoted to sergeant and started the Community Service Unit within the department. Along with obtaining a mobile trailer that served as a remote police station throughout the town, he worked closely with the Council on Aging, bringing both the ‘Are You OK?’ program and TRIAD to town to assist senior citizens in their day-to-day lives.

“I enjoyed working with the seniors and as I find myself rapidly approaching that demographic, I believe I could be a strong advocate for that segment of the population,” he said.

In 2008, he was promoted to the rank of detective sergeant, supervising the newly formed Bureau of Criminal Investigation. “I’ve seen firsthand the effect crime can have on a victim, the devastating results the opioid crisis has had on families in Canton and throughout the commonwealth, and how PTSD has effected veterans and their loved ones. I believe the board can address these issues with new and innovative initiatives and I’d like to be a part of that.” He continues to be a generous supporter of Canton Veterans Services.

Throughout his police career, Quigley had been involved in policy making and negotiations as a member of the leadership staff and president of the Canton Police Association. Along with working with various town departments, he developed partnerships with both state and federal agencies.

Quigley graduated from Bridgewater State College with a bachelor’s degree in political science. During his summer breaks, he worked for the Canton Recreation Department. He received a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College. He is an active member of the Canton Town Club, the Sons of the American Legion, and Wampatuck Country Club. He is an avid crossfitter, working out at Crossfit Homebase in Canton. On most days, he can be seen walking his dog in the downtown area, an exercise he says allows him to talk with people about current events both on the local and national level. “I’ve met a lot of great people with a lot of great ideas,” he said.
