Firefighters rescue man in industrial accident

By

Canton firefighters rescued a 60-year-old man who became trapped underneath collapsed industrial shelving at a warehouse on Shawmut Road on Thursday, February 21, around 7:45 a.m.

Fire Lt. Tom Norton said the man suffered severe lower body injuries and was transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment.

In another call later that morning, firefighters responded to a report of a gas odor at Woodfield Commons Apartments on Bay Drive. Firefighters and crews from Columbia Gas noticed a strong odor of gas on the third floor and subsequently traced the leak to a connection from a gas line to a water heater in one of the units. The gas line was shut off and repairs were made. Norton said the remainder of the apartments in the building were checked and the building was ventilated as needed.

During the week of February 17-24, firefighters responded to a total of 68 calls for service, none of which were opioid-related.

Windstorm leads to downed trees, wires

The Canton Police, Fire and Public Works departments had a very busy start to the week as they responded to several reports of downed trees and wires throughout the town caused by high winds on Monday, February 25.

Fire Lt. Tom Norton said one of the downed power lines struck a moving car on Neponset Street, but the driver was able to extricate himself safely from the vehicle without injuries. The car caught fire a short time later and was extinguished by firefighters after power was shut off to the power lines.

DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta said a tree fell on two cars at Canton High School but to his knowledge there were no injuries. Firefighters also responded to reports of fallen trees that struck homes on Greenlodge Street and Randolph Street. No injuries were reported, but the homes incurred structural damage, according to Norton.

Firefighter crews also responded to reports of downed wires on Randolph Street and Pecunit Street and the roads were temporarily closed to clear debris and wires. Firefighters also removed the sign in front of the Neponset Café in Canton Center with the use of an aerial ladder and ropes after the sign partially broke away from the building and was “dangerously swaying in the wind,” according to Norton.

In addition, a stretch of Route 138 near the Route 128 exit was closed briefly so that crews could clear a fallen tree. DPW workers also cleared brush on Manitou Road, Elm Street, Randolph Street, Indian Lane and Wayside Lane.
