CHS track teams impress at State Coaches’ Invitational

After qualifying in a previous meet, 20 members of the CHS boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams traveled to Durfee High School in Fall River to compete in the State Coaches Invitational Meet on Saturday. Canton’s Matt Sidney placed fifth in the state in the high jump, Tom Kerikas placed sixth with a personal best in the 400 hurdles, and Mike Bronstein eclipsed his personal best with a time of 4:50 in the mile. Jon Vaughn made it to the finals in the 100 and 200 and ended up eighth in the state in both races.

Sophomore Lauren Berman ran a personal best, improving by nine seconds and finishing second with a time of 5:12.85 in the mile.

Earlier in the week, the boys’ track team lost its last dual meet of the season to Foxboro 74-61.

Seniors Vaughn, Chris Boughter and Kerikas scored ten points each, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Foxboro’s depth.

First place wins were recorded by: Sidney, high jump, six feet; Vaughn, 100-meter dash, 11.2 seconds, and 200, 23.2 seconds; Obi Nwankwo, 400-meter dash, 53.1 seconds; and sophomore Mike Rota, 800 meters, 2:21.2.

James Grella placed second in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, seven inches and recorded a personal best in the discus when he surpassed 100 feet for the first time this season with a throw of 105 feet, eight inches.

Canton had two sweeps, in the 800 and 200-meter runs. Besides Rota’s winning run, Cam Huber placed second at 2:21.3 and sophomore Craig Mills took third place at 2:23.5.

Vaughn’s victory in the 200 was followed by Boughter’s second place at 24.2 seconds and junior Evan Feldman’s third place at 24.9.

Kerikas placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at 60.94 seconds, and second in the 110-meter hurdles at 16 seconds. He placed third in the long jump at 17 feet eight inches and second in the triple jump at 36 feet, 11 inches. Michael Bronstein finished third in the mile at 4:59; Julian Malbranche was second in the javelin at 129 feet, two inches, and Boughter was third in the high jump at five feet, eight inches, and second in the long jump at 18 feet, 10 inches.

Girls’ track team tops Foxboro

The CHS girls’ outdoor track team defeated Foxboro 74-62 last Tuesday, bringing its Davenport Division record to 2-2 and overall season record to 3-3.

Top point scorers were Kate D’Orazio, who won the 400 hurdles and the open 400 race; Vicky Tondre, who won the long jump and came in second in both the 100 and the triple jump; Chidimma Nwankwo, with a first in both the shot put and discus; and Berman, with wins in the mile and the 800.

Canton had one sweep in the meet with Stephanie Mui placing first in the high jump, followed by Avery Devoe and Kristen Fabbiano.

Other point scorers were: Rachel Campagna, third, 100; Michaela Kelly, second, 400; Mellyn Costello, first, 100 hurdles; Radiya Buchanan, second, 200, and first, triple jump; Tara Saraf, second, two mile; Lexie MacQuarrie, third, shot put; and Anna Amico, second, javelin.
