CHS boys’ tennis team downs Foxboro

By

The Canton High boys’ tennis team showed some of its trademark resiliency this past Thursday, scrapping and clawing its way to a 3-2 victory over Foxboro. The Bulldogs, who were without top singles player Viboosh Chandrasekar, improved their record to 5-7 on the season.

Senior Peter Sidney, playing in the number two singles slot, earned a huge three-set win in what was perhaps the match of the day, and according to head coach Leo Nelson, one of the great comebacks in recent CHS tennis memory.

“Peter Sidney had one of the greatest come-from-behind wins I’ve seen since I started coaching at Canton High,” Nelson said. After dropping the first set, Sidney began his rousing comeback, winning the second set in a tiebreak that shifted the momentum of the match.

“Peter came out and didn’t play aggressively and dug himself into a pretty big whole to climb out of,” Nelson said. “But he kept battling and the second set really set up his momentum for the win.”

Sidney was not the only member of the team playing inspired ball, as both doubles teams continued their excellent play and contributed with convincing wins. The senior-freshman tandem of Scott Chamberlain and Sam Riemer continue to perfect the nuances of their game, to the delight of their coach.

“Scott and Sam are communicating with each other and learning from each other to find their opponents’ weaknesses and capitalize when they get the chance,” Nelson said.

The second doubles pairing of Alex Geyyer and Alex Garcia are enhancing their games with each passing match as well.

“Geyyer and Garcia are trying to get on the court any chance they get and improve on their games,” Nelson said. “Both doubles teams are staying aggressive and taking the net at every opportunity.”

Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs fell 4-1 at home to Sharon, who proved its reputation as one of the most dangerous teams in the state. Although the Bulldogs didn’t have a great day as a team, they were encouraged by the ongoing brilliance of freshman sensation Chandrasekar, who took home the lone win for Canton.

“Once Viboosh matures a little more with his attitude, he will be one of the better players in Massachusetts,” Nelson predicted.

Chandrasekar is getting a crash course in Massachusetts tennis, as he represented Canton at the MIAA Tournament this weekend. He defeated his opponent from Brockton High, winning the opportunity to compete this coming weekend at Newton North.

The action continues hot and heavy for the Bulldogs this week, as they host matches with Norwood, Oliver Ames and Dedham.
