BOH Summer Fun and Safety Fair a big hit
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
The Canton Summer Fun and Safety Fair, sponsored by the Board of Health, was held on May 21 at Pequitside Farm and, thanks to clear skies and a break in the weather, went off without a hitch. Consequently, it seemed that everyone who participated thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Of course, this could not have been accomplished without the generous support and contributions from the town departments, private businesses and volunteers who took part.
Accordingly, a special thanks needs to go out to those same individuals, town departments and private businesses who magnanimously contributed time, prizes and other items, and manpower to make this a successful and truly memorable event. Of particular note are the Canton Firefighters Local 1580, who collaborated with Milford Bicycle Co. to donate a stylish and very “cool” looking bicycle to be raffled off to those young enough at heart who came and participated in the events and educational displays. Also putting their “donuts where their mouths were,” and who deserve a special thank-you was Dunkin’ Brands of Canton for donating enough coffee and donuts to ensure that everyone’s donut desires at the fair would be fulfilled.
This year, the Canton Police Department joined forces with the Freemasons from Blue Hill Lodge, A.F. & A.M., as well as several lodges from other nearby towns to conduct a Masonic Youth Childhood Identification (MY-CHIP) event where children could have one copy of an electronic identification profile created, which was then given to parents for safekeeping in the event that a child ever went missing. This turned out to be a surprisingly popular event. The Canton Police also presented several other educational events, including a bike helmet safety display, which was also quite popular.
Others who deserve a show of gratitude for their displays and/or presentations include the Massachusetts Division of the Salvation Army, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Bureau of Forest Fire Control, and Boston MedFlight for the equipment and educational materials they supplied to the event. And once again this year, the “Touch-a-Truck” segment of the Summer Safety Fair was a success thanks to the generous donations of time and the trucks and other equipment loaned by local businesses, the Canton DPW, sewer and water departments, and the Fire Department as well as others previously mentioned.
Special gratitude goes to the Building Maintenance Department for doing more than their share of the heavy lifting before, during and after the event, as well as the Recreation Department for creating those hot dog and hamburger culinary delights, just the way you like them. And who could forget the musical magic of DJ Gary Titus, who kept the records spinning (figuratively speaking) throughout the day.
To all those who came to enjoy themselves at the 2011 Summer Fun and Safety Fair, and all those who helped, our sincerest thanks from all of us at the Board of Health.
Sincerely,
John L. Ciccotelli, R.S., C.H.O.
