Residents displaced after Shepard Way fire
By Mike BergerTwo residents were displaced, but no injuries were reported following a two-alarm fire at a home on Shepard Way last Tuesday, May 7.
Fire Chief Charles Doody said the home sustained significant fire, water, and smoke damage estimated at $250,000 and remains uninhabitable. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.
The two residents, who were able to exit the house before firefighters arrived, are staying with family until the home is repaired.
The fire broke out around 1:20 a.m. and upon arrival, first responders found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the residence, near the adjacent garage. A second alarm was sounded, bringing additional firefighters from Norwood, Stoughton, Milton and Sharon. Randolph and Westwood firefighters provided coverage at the Canton station.
Canton firefighters stretched a fire line to the rear of the residence while Stoughton firefighters removed the attic vent. Canton firefighters then went to the roof to cut a hole to gain better access to the fire.
After the main body of the fire was extinguished, firefighters remained on scene to check for fire extension. It took nearly two and a half hours for the flames to be fully extinguished, and crews began to clear the scene around 4:45 a.m.
For the week of May 6-13, Canton firefighters responded to a total of 81 service calls, none of which were opioid-related. The Fire Department also received a donation of $18,294 to purchase of two thermal imaging cameras from Patricia Sullivan in memory of Edward A. Vance.
