Library’s Friends add summer reading books to Children’s Book Sale

The Friends of the Canton Public Library are planning something new for the upcoming annual Children’s Book Sale on June 18. In addition to a wide variety of donated books, the Friends will have books from the lists of required reading for the schools.

“We had a lot of help from the schools, especially (curriculum director) Jen Henderson,” said Friends president Mike Sundin. “We really made an effort so that we knew which books are required reading. We had those lists ahead of time.”

As donations come into the library, gently used copies of those books are being set aside for kids who would like to buy their books for school at a savings. The Friends are also working with Wellesley Books, which is providing 12 to 20 new copies of each title for purchase. The book sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundin said that some books for adults will also be available.

The book sale follows last month’s Knight sleepover for boys. “It was fun!” Sundin said. The young knights learned about chivalry, took part in balancing activities, had ‘sword fights’ and used marshmallows as weapons for the catapults they made before being knighted in a solemn ceremony.

During the spring, the Friends held a cooking class and jewelry-making program for teenagers. “That went well,” Sundin said. “There was good participation.”

Later this month, author and radio talk show host Howie Carr will give a talk on his latest book “Hitman: The Untold Story of Johnny Martorano: Whitey Bulger’s Enforcer and the Most Feared Gangster in the Underworld.”

The Friends are supporting participation in the “One World, Many Stories” collaborative summer library program, which promotes reading for all ages. The program will begin when school has ended for the summer.

The Friends have also used funds to purchase books, a DVD cleaning machine to extend the life of kids’ movies and educational materials, a new computer for the Junior Room, audio books, and parenting and activity books.

Books for the upcoming sale can be dropped off at the library on Thursdays during regular hours. The traditional book sale for adults will be held in early September.
