Remembering Brooke Stephens
By Canton CitizenThe following was submitted by colleagues of Brooke Stephens and originally appeared in the June 6 edition of the Canton Citizen.
Brooke Stephens served as the speech-language pathologist (SLP) at the Luce Elementary School for over 15 years. Â The students, staff and families consider themselves extremely fortunate to have her as a member of their school community. She was the consummate professional.
After a courageous battle with breast cancer, Stephens passed away on April 19 at the young age of 42. The Luce School staff and students are mourning her passing daily as they walk by her office and remember the SLP who gave so much of herself to them. Not everyone knew about her battle with breast cancer, and that is how she wanted it. She was selfless in all aspects of life, always giving so much to others.
Stephens greatly valued her friendships with others. Those lucky enough to call her a friend have been left with a great void in their hearts. She not only loved her family, friends, students, and profession, but she also loved her pets and time spent volunteering at the Quincy Animal Shelter. The students at the Luce have been collecting wish list items to share with the shelter in her memory.
Stephens’ Canton colleagues plan to install a communication board on the Luce playground in her memory as she felt strongly that her students have access to the skills to communicate with one another. She felt that friendship and opportunities to play were especially important.
