Fireworks display returning to Canton July 4th

The July Fourth holiday will begin with the Annual Road Race and end with something the town hasn’t seen for a few years — a fireworks celebration.

“I think it’s a good idea,” Canton Recreation Department Director Jeff Kaylor said. “It’s a patriotic time. We had a lot of requests from residents for fireworks. We’re going to give it our best shot.”

The July Fourth fireworks will mark the first time in two years that the skies above Canton will be lit up with the holiday colors.

The day’s activities will start at 9:30 a.m. at the Town Club with the five-mile road race and two-mile fun run. The charge for the race is $10 per person, and the charge for the fun run is $5 per person. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

The afternoon activities will be held at the Galvin Middle School. Kaylor said that some of the games and attractions are similar to those held during the Block Party. They include a baseball pitch, a basketball toss, a dunk tank, face painting, an obstacle course, and a train ride. The rides are free. The only cost will be for purchases made at the food concessions.

The Reminisants, an oldies and request band, will perform at 6:30 p.m. followed by the fireworks at 9.

Kaylor said that using the Galvin area is a good idea.

“It’s a more wide open space,” he said, contrasting it with the former location at Memorial Field. “It’s a short drive from the police station. There’s good viewing from fields between the Galvin and the Hansen (schools). There’s parking at the Galvin.” He encouraged families to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the celebration.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Kaylor said. “It was always popular having something in our town on the Fourth.”

Several businesses have contributed to the cost of the celebration, but approximately $15,000 is still needed by June 30 to pay for the fireworks.

Donation barrels will be set up at the Galvin on July Fourth. Anyone who wishes to make a donation may send it to the Canton Recreation Department, 92 Pleasant Street, Canton, MA 02021, or drop it off at that location.
