Legion baseball opens season on a high note
By Mike BergerThe Canton Post 24 American Legion baseball team opened its 2011 season in dramatic fashion, beating Brookline 5-3 in extra innings last Friday, June 10.
Tied 3-3 at the start of the eighth inning, Canton came up with a pair of runs in the top half of the inning, and reliever Casey Sullivan shut the door on Brookline’s batters in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win.
Matt Bernstein and Brennan Sullivan also pitched well in Canton’s first game, with Bernstein throwing four innings of shutout ball. Chris Barletta and Dan Friedman chipped in offensively with some key hits.
Legion head coach Colin Clapton said it was a great win for Canton – not only was it on the road, but it was also the first time the entire roster was together since many of the Canton and Sharon players were involved in the state playoffs.
“We emphasize a team game here, and all of the 17 players on the roster had a hand in this win,” said Clapton. “It was a great team win.”
Clapton said the team has a good mix of veterans and first-year players and appears to be loaded with pitching depth.
Weather permitting, Canton was due to play two games earlier this week – Monday versus Foxboro and Tuesday at Franklin. The team will host Walpole on Thursday (today) and Norwood on Friday at 5:45 p.m. Canton then travels to Norfolk on Sunday, June 19, before returning home to play Needham on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.
