MAC-led Hanningtons wins Atlantic Coast softball title
By Canton CitizenThe 2011 Hanningtons of Massachusetts senior softball team, sponsored by Canton attorney Glen Hannington and managed by Canton resident and Canton Citizen columnist Joe DeFelice, won the prestigious Atlantic Coast National Qualifier played at the spectacular four-field Potomack Lakes Sportsplex in Loudoun County, Virginia, during the week of May 16-21.
Hanningtons compiled a 5-1 record, with their only loss coming in the finals against the Hamel Cavaliers of Virginia 19-18, which prompted the “if” game. Hanningtons proceeded to master a thrilling 15-12 victory, spearheaded by Charlie Howe’s three-run homerun and John “Spider” Walsh’s base-clearing triple. Spider led Hanningtons with 16 hits in 18 at bats for an outstanding .889 tournament batting average.
The Hannington team compiled a team batting average of .620, averaging 19 runs a game on the way to the championship. Team sponsor Glen Hannington received a specially designed Atlantic Coast championship trophy while each player received a jacket and a championship ring.
Hanningtons has now earned a berth to the Tournament of Champions in Polk County (Lakeland), Florida, in February 2012, as well as the World Senior Softball Championship in Phoenix, Arizona, in October.
