St. John’s celebrates 150 years
By Canton CitizenOn June 16, 1861, amidst the turmoil of the Civil War, the parish of Saint John the Evangelist was established in Canton. Throughout the next 150 years, dedicated parishioners and clergy continued the journey and handed on faith and fellowship. One hundred and fifty years later, located in the heart of downtown Canton and still flourishing with faith and activity, the parishioners of St. John the Evangelist, along with members of the extended Canton community, are celebrating the church’s sesquicentennial — highlighted by an anniversary mass on June 5.
The mass was celebrated by Sean Cardinal O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, along with many clergy, deacons, and religious leaders who have served St. John’s over the past and present. A large crowd, brimming with nostalgia, fellowship, joy and faith, came together to celebrate this momentous occasion, not just as a parish family, but as a community with many attendees from the town, St. Gerard Majella, other faith denominations, and people from surrounding communities.
As the anniversary year unfolds, there are still many spiritual and social events that lie ahead, and a warm welcome and invitation is extended to all. As a parish and faith-filled community, Saint John the Evangelist looks forward to continuing service to the Canton community for another 150 years and more!
