Finishing the regular season with consecutive dual meet wins, the Canton High boys indoor track team surged to an impressive, fourth-place finish at the Hockomock League Championship Meet held last weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

“Last year the boys finished in 12th place at Hocks with five points total as a team. This morning they finished fourth overall with 50 team points,” noted head coach Anna Amico in a Twitter post on Saturday. “So proud of the dedication, hard work, and the constant pushing of each other in practice to improve! Great job guys!”

The Bulldogs narrowly edged Oliver Ames in the team competition while finishing just three points behind third-place King Philip. The league’s two unbeaten teams, Stoughton (5-0) and Mansfield (5-0), took the top two spots with 107 and 70 points, respectively.

Leading the way for the Canton boys was junior sprinter Jonathan Chery, who won the 55-meter dash with a personal-best time of 6.55 seconds — breaking his own school record in the process. A standout performer all season, Chery also placed second in the 300 meters (36.11) and was a major contributor in the winning 4×200 relay, which also included Junior Sainvil, Cam Sanchez, and Zach Goldstein. The quartet also set a new school record with a time of 1:33.16.

Other top performers for the boys included Deyontai Dennis, who took third in the long jump with a school-record distance of 20’11.25”; Goldstein, who placed third in the 300m with a personal-best time of 36.47; and Sainvil, who placed third in the 55m (6.78) and fifth in the long jump (20’7.75”).

In the girls competition, Canton settled for 11th place as a team but it was still a banner day for senior Bronwyn Mahoney, who won the league shot put title with a personal-best throw of 35 feet.

While Mahoney was the team’s lone place-winner, several of her teammates recorded personal bests at the meet, including Kate Kelleher, Kayla Wong, Kayla Camille, Rosana Cho, Leah Murphy, Jayda Taylor and Erika Boone.

Also posting personal bests in the boys’ competition were CHS track team members Kyle Downing, Andrew DiBiasio, Nate Rose, Graham Stemm, Nate Quan, and Andy Butler.

Qualifying athletes from both squads are now busy preparing for the upcoming MIAA Division 4 Indoor Championships, to be held this Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. Chery enters the meet with the second-best 55m time and the fourth-best 300 time, while Dennis is seeded second in the long jump and eighth in the high jump.

Other athletes who are scheduled to compete on Saturday include Sainvil (55m, long jump), Goldstein (300m), Sanchez (55m), Downing (2-mile), Mahoney (shot put), and Leah Murphy (high jump). Also qualifying for the meet are the top-seeded boys 4×200 relay along with the boys 4×400 and girls 4×800 relays.
