Blue Hills grad opens Vanity, a salon and spa
By Jeffrey CattelOpening your own salon and spa may seem like a daunting task at 23 years old, but the premise didn’t faze Canton resident Angela Federico. After working as a hair stylist at a local salon for several years, Federico said this week she was ready to venture out on her own. In November, she opened Vanity, a salon and spa, located at 351 Turnpike Street.
But Federico didn’t go into this new venture alone. Three of the hair stylists at the new salon are friends Federico met while studying cosmetology at Blue Hills Regional Technical School.
“We remained friends all through high school and afterwards,” Federico said. “I’m really excited they decided to join me at Vanity.”
A lifelong Canton resident, Federico said opening up her business in town was a “no-brainer.” Although there are many salons in Canton, Federico said she chose the Route 138 location for her business because there were few salons outside of Canton center.
Choosing a name for the salon came almost as instinctively.
“I had thought about everything else, but I hadn’t thought about the name,” she said. “One day I was driving down the street and I was listening to Christina Aguilera’s song ‘Vanity.’ It was talking about how you should love yourself before you love someone else, and how you should just take care of yourself. And, I thought, oh my god, what a great name.”
Since the salon opened three months ago, business has been strong.
“We haven’t even had a chance to put together a website,” Federico said. “Most of our business has come through our Facebook page, referrals and clients at other salons we’ve worked at.”
Federico’s mother, Donna, also said Blue Hills, where Angela is a member of the cosmetology board, has been incredibly supportive of the new salon.
“Many of the teachers and staff at Blue Hills used to go to the girls at the old salon they worked at,” Donna Federico said. “Now, they’re coming to Vanity and passing the word along to other staff as well. I feel like every day there’s someone else from Blue Hills who stops in.”
The salon and spa offers a wide range of services, including haircuts, color, keratin treatment, waxing, facials, manicures and pedicures. Haircuts start at $40 for women and $25 for men and children. A one-process color runs $50 while foils start at $90. On the spa side, eyebrow waxing starts at $18, manicures at $20 and pedicures at $35.
Vanity runs a number of monthly promotional packages. For February, the salon is offering the blowout package: 5 blow-drys for $100, a savings of $50. Other monthly promotions include Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger KeraTriplex keratin treatment with blowout for $30 (a $55 value) and Murad’s Resurgence Renewal Facial for $100 (a $130 value).
Vanity is open Tuesday 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday-Friday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 781-562-0424.
