CHS indoor track teams solid at D3 Coaches Invitational
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls’ indoor track team was well represented at the Division 3 Coaches Invitational Meet held on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston. Two of the girls, Vicky Tondre and Chidimma Nwankwo, qualified for this weekend’s McIntyre Elite Meet after finishing in the top 24 in the long jump and shot put, respectively.
Canton head coach Ben Mattson said the girls had a great weekend, led by Tondre, whose long jump of 17 feet, two inches was the fourth-best in the state this year, and Nwankwo, who placed 15th in the shot put with a best throw of 33 feet, six inches.
Mattson was also impressed with the performance of two of the team’s relay units. Due to a sickness, three freshmen ran the 4×400 relay and “all did awesome,” according to Mattson. Zoe Rosenberg, Jackie Merrigan, Lexie MacQuarrie, and senior Mairead Bagley all ran great times. Mellyn Costello also nearly qualified for the Elite Meet in the 55-meter hurdles.
Coming back from injury, Anna Amico just missed the cutoff for the Elite Meet in the sprints. The 4×200 team of Costello, Amico, Tondre, and Tara Saraf also performed well.
CHS boys’ head coach Chris Elgar reported two big accomplishments at the meet. The 4×200 relay qualified for the Division 3 state competition with a time of 1:37.48. Elgar said substitute runner Tom Kerikas performed very well (with limited prep time) in place of Matt Sidney, who was unable to participate because of a calf injury.
One of the runners also had one of his spikes clipped and was “racing with it half on and half off, like a flat tire,” Elgar said. Contributing to the successful relay besides Kerikas was Jon Vaughn, Chris Boughter, and Obi Nwankwo. “They all kept cool under pressure to get the qualifying standard,” said Elgar.
Boughter made the state competition in the high jump with a personal best of five feet, 11 inches. He also just missed six feet, one inch.
Vaughn ran a solid hurdles event but missed the finals as he finished 13th with a time of 8.15 seconds. Elgar said Cam Huber also ran well in the 600, finishing in 1:27.82 despite battling a lingering cold. Mike Bronstein had to sit out the two-mile because of sickness.
Both teams are now preparing for the rescheduled meet against Oliver Ames this Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Franklin Field House. The Hockomock Meet will take place on Saturday, February 12, at the Reggie Lewis Center.
