Girls’ hockey bounces back with 3-0 week
By Jeffrey CattelAfter two lackluster, winless weeks, the Canton High girls’ ice hockey team bounced back in a big way last week, winning all three of its games: 3-0 over Quincy, 6-3 against Westwood, and 4-0 over King Philip. The girls’ season record now stands at 7-4-2.
The Bulldogs dominated from the start in the game against Quincy. In the first five minutes, the puck barely made it into Canton’s defensive zone. Still, Quincy fought back hard and the game remained scoreless after the first period.
Haley Gaughan netted the first goal of the game off an assist from Elise Barry. The Bulldogs added two more goals in the third period — one each from Michelle McNeil and Julia Murphy – while Gaughan, Meaghan McKenna, and Meghan Lennon were each credited with assists. Senior goalie Sarah Healey had a dominating performance in net, stopping all 10 shots from Quincy.
Canton started similarly strong in Saturday’s game against Westwood, with Murphy netting the game’s first goal off an assist from Casey Considine. At the start of the second period, Gaughan scored the Bulldogs’ second goal, but Westwood quickly answered with a goal to make it 2-1.
A quick second goal by the Wolverines tied the score at 2 at the beginning of the third. However, Canton managed to regroup after a crucial timeout and pulled ahead with four more goals — three by McKenna for a hat trick and another by Gaughan, her second of the contest.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs got their second shutout of the week with a 4-0 victory over King Philip. But the win didn’t come easily as KP’s goalie, Alyssa Siegmann, kept the Warriors in the game with 73 saves. McKenna and McNeil scored one goal each in the second period, and Lennon and Considine netted two more goals in the third. Lennon, McKenna, Nicki Wanless, and Ali King each tallied an assist.
“It was nice to be able to get everyone some playing time and finish the weekend with three wins in a row,” coach Kelly Rider said of her team’s performance this week.
Results from Wednesday’s game against Hingham will appear in next week’s Citizen.
