CHS boys’ hoop team no match for Hock Large opponents
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys’ basketball team, now 4-9, lost to two of the better teams in the Hockomock League’s large school division last week. The hosting Bulldogs lost to Attleboro 80-49; and after playing well for three quarters, the visiting Bulldogs lost to the Franklin Panthers 71-51 Friday night.
Coach Mike Devoll said his team played three of its best quarters of the year against the 11-2 Panthers, executing its offense and playing good defense. The Bulldogs trailed 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, 48-40 at the half, and cut the lead to one point in the third quarter before trailing by six at the quarter’s end. In the fourth quarter, Franklin’s top scorer Tyson Kessler connected on several three pointers on his way to 24 points and Canton missed some free throws down the stretch, as the Panthers took a seven-point lead to a double digit lead with a few minutes to go in the game.
Canton’s leading scorer was Joe McCabe with 21 points; Devoll praised the play of Chris Murray, who was tremendous in the third quarter with great defensive plays, great passes and 11 points. Devoll also noted that reserves Michael Charles and Wade Ransome played very well off the bench, with great defense and rebounding.
Noting that his team had three tough games in a matter of days, combined with little practice because of snow days, Devoll said he was happy to see the Bulldogs play well against Franklin, executing its offense and not turning the ball over as much as it did in the Attleboro loss.
In the Attleboro game on January 25 — the first time the Bulldogs faced the team in 20 years — the game was competitive in the early going, with Canton trailing 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. Attleboro, however, took advantage of its height, inside shooting and quick defensive press to increase the lead to 25 points at the end of the half.
McCabe led the Canton offense with 13 points, followed by Murray with eight points and sophomore reserve Jaden Mason with six points.
Canton was scheduled to travel to Sharon on Tuesday, February 1; host Foxboro on Friday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m.; and host a special Monday game on February 7 at 5 p.m. against Southeastern Regional Vocational Tech.
