Canton High sports kick off with new rules, protocols
By Canton CitizenIn a new post on his Athletics Blog, Canton High Athletic Director Danny Erickson welcomed the return of fall sports with first practices scheduled to begin on Monday, September 21.
The sports approved for the fall will each have a two-week preseason (slightly less for golf) and the season will wrap up prior to the Friday before Thanksgiving.
Erickson noted that fall sports will “play under new, significant modifications and guidelines,” including requirements for face coverings, daily COVID screenings, a 25-person maximum at practices (thereby limiting roster sizes), and a maximum of 50 spectators per contest. (CHS athletes will be limited to two spectators per family and at home games only. No admission fee will be charged at any contest.)
Regarding physical exam requirements, Erickson reiterated the MIAA rule that physicals are only valid for 13 months from the date it was performed. “It is understood that many doctors’ offices struggled to maintain their exam schedules this spring/summer and many held exams using tele-health,” he said. “Unfortunately, the Mass. Department of Public Health has ruled that virtual physicals are not acceptable to clear a student-athlete for athletic participation. Acceptable physical reports may be emailed to the athletic office or uploaded as part of the FamilyID registration process.”
On the Athletic Department’s transportation policy, Erickson noted that a temporary change was approved allowing parents/guardians or an immediate household family member to transport their children to away contests. Legally licensed student-athletes may also drive themselves and any siblings to away games with parent/guardian approval.
Erickson urged anyone who has any questions or concerns about the upcoming fall season to contact him at ericksond@cantonma.org or 781-821-5050 ext. 6. Additional information can be found on the CHS Athletics Blog.
