VAC nature play area opens with giant sandbox
By Canton CitizenMost visitors to the Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center in Canton come to view the professional art exhibitions by internationally known artists. Some visit the site for quiet contemplation and to experience nature at its 124-acre wildlife sanctuary. Now, the Visual Arts Center offers yet another way for visitors to get out in nature through its recently opened nature play area.
Unlike static, traditional playgrounds, nature play areas at Mass Audubon sites throughout the state give children the chance to solve problems and construct their surroundings through natural elements and unstructured exploration.
The first element of the VAC’s nature play area is a giant sandbox, which swallowed 12 tons of sand to its brim. Located near the large granite rock outcropping directly adjacent to the entrance path, this location is a perennial favorite of visiting families.
As soon as the ribbon was cut, the children in the summer camp began digging. Soon the play area will be stocked with “chalking” rocks to be used as a natural medium to draw on the granite outcropping. Twigs, tree bark and stones will also be available to assemble and create mini cities along the play area’s perimeter.
Stop by the Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center and check it out! And while you are there, visit the exhibition of miniature birds by A. J. King. Art exhibits at the Visual Arts Center always include children’s activities, too.
