CHS girls hoop stays unbeaten with sweep of Eagles
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls basketball team continued its hot start with back-to-back blowout wins over Sharon last week, improving to 3-0 on the season. But head coach Jim Choquette knows the days are coming when the lady Bulldogs will have to play at the top of their game with upcoming showdowns against division rivals Oliver Ames and Foxboro.
This week, Canton has only one game on the schedule — a home contest tonight against North Attleboro, a team that CHS already defeated on the road in the season opener, 48-32.
The competition gets even tougher over the next two weeks with home-and-home series against the OA Tigers (3-0), a perennial playoff contender, and reigning Davenport Division champion Foxboro (3-2).
Last week against Sharon, Choquette played all of his players as the Bulldogs jumped out to commanding early leads in both contests. In their January 12 home win, Canton led by 20 at the half and rolled to a 54-23 victory. Eight different players scored points in the win, led by sisters Fay Gallery (22 pts., including five three-pointers) and Sydney Gallery (14 pts.).
In the rematch at Sharon two days later, the Eagles dressed only eight players and the Bulldogs raced out to a 20-1 lead after one quarter and led by 27 at the half. Cerruti scored a game-high 19 points, including five threes, while Sydney and Fay Gallery added 13 and 12, respectively. Talya DeGraw also chipped in with eight points in the win.
Highly touted going into the season, the Bulldogs have looked sharp out of the gate with better team defense, passing, shooting, communication and team chemistry compared to this time last year. The team also reported in excellent physical shape with several players coming off successful fall seasons, including Cerruti in her cross country debut and Fay Gallery and Annie Hoban with the Davenport champion girls soccer team.
Choquette said it also helped to have eight players return this year with previous varsity experience. Still, he said there is room for improvement, with help defense and limiting turnovers two particular areas of focus. Success in both of those areas, along with continued offensive execution will be needed in order to separate themselves from the likes of OA and Foxboro, Choquette said.
