Police arrest two in car breaks

Canton police recently arrested two young men, one from Canton and one from Stoughton, in connection with at least three car breaks in the area around Pleasant and Bolivar streets over the past 10 days. Detective Sgt. Jim Quigley urged car owners to lock their doors, as in each instance GPS electronic equipment and personal property were taken. Police charged the two men, both 19, with multiple counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime. Quigley said the break-ins were recorded in the last two weeks and more occurred this past weekend after the two were arrested. The break in the case came when one of the suspects attempted to use a stolen ATM card at a Bank of America branch, and the card was declined. A bank surveillance camera caught the attempt. The investigation is ongoing.

Police foil another attempted metals theft

In a continuing series of thefts involving precious metals and tools, police arrested Frank Giannone, 27, of Stoughton, and charged him with larceny over $250. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said 400 bolts were taken from BDA Construction on North Street and were attempted to be sold at an industrial building on Springdale Avenue. Over the past few months, police have received several reports of metal and/or tools being taken from commercial buildings, followed by attempts to sell the items at nearby commercial sites. The value of metal and tools has escalated in the market, police said.

Firefighters extinguish VW bus fire

Eight firefighters from Canton and Randolph worked together to extinguish a Volkswagen bus fire on Route 93 North at Exit 2 on Thursday, August 11, at 10:28 a.m. The occupants of the vehicle were able to escape injury, and no firefighters were hurt in the blaze. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the incident could have been worse as firefighters were able to remove a propane tank from the vehicle before it exploded. Marshall reported that the van was fully engulfed and destroyed in the fire.
