Police probe accident, shooting on Rte. 138

Although no arrests were made as of Monday, March 1, Canton police have some promising leads in connection with a recent hit and run accident on Route 138 in which gunshots were fired. According to Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty, police were first called to the entrance of the Arboretum Apartments on Sunday, February 21, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Both vehicles involved in the accident were found to be abandoned and the responding officers noticed ballistic damage to the windows of one of the vehicles. A video of the accident recorded by a witness and subsequently shared with Fox 25 shows the two cars colliding, causing one of them to spin out. An occupant of that vehicle is then seen approaching the other car and firing several shots.

In a statement to the press on February 24, Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said police do not believe the incident was motivated by road rage. “The parties knew each other and it was intended,” he said. Berkowitz added that he was “disgusted” by what he saw in the video while emphasizing the recklessness of the motorists’ actions. “These guys are out in the middle of a main street firing a gun,” he said.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident and the investigation is ongoing. “We have some idea of the people involved in the incident and have good leads into the investigation,” Rafferty said.

Town to hold second-dose vaccine clinics

The Canton Fire and Health departments will administer second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to seniors 75 years and older on Thursday at Orchard Cove (200 doses) and Friday at the Canton Senior Center (100 doses). The town also received 200 first doses for residents of Canton Housing Authority properties and will be holding clinics next week at Rubin Court, Hagan Court and the Hemenway apartments. The Fire Department will also continue to vaccinate more homebound seniors next week, March 9-10. Other eligible residents who have not yet received their first dose are encouraged to search for available appointments via the state website at vaxfinder.mass.gov.

Daylight Savings begins Sunday, March 14

With clocks moving ahead one hour for the start of Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March 14, the Canton Fire Department is reminding the public to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. “Remember, change your clocks, change your batteries,” said Fire Dept. Lt. Tom Norton.

Auto excise bills due March 11

Canton’s 2021 automobile excise tax bills were mailed on February 9 and are due on March 11. Excise bills can also be accessed and paid online via the “Online Payments” link on the bottom of the town homepage at town.canton.ma.us.
