Police probe robbery at Rte. 138 Shell Station

Canton police have begun an investigation into a robbery at the Route 138 Shell Station on Sunday, April 18, around 2 a.m. Police released a description of the suspect as a heavy-set white male believed to be in his 40s, approximately 5’8” and 260 pounds, with a salt and pepper beard. He was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans at the time of the alleged robbery. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the suspect did not show a weapon but claimed to have a gun. He made away with approximately $150 in cash.

Firefighters respond to Chapman St. dumpster fire

On Tuesday, April 13, at 4 p.m., Canton firefighters responded to a dumpster fire in the parking lot at 510 Chapman Street. Crews arrived to find the dumpster fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly doused the fire with water and flooded the dumpster with foam. Fire Lt. Tom Norton said the dumpster was 500 feet from the building and posed no danger to the occupants.

New trash-recycling contract in line with projections

Last week the Select Board approved new three-year contracts with Republic Services for trash and recycling collection. The contracts take effect July 1 and there will be no interruption of service or route changes. Under the new agreement, Republic will continue its same duties but will bring resident recyclables to a Waste Management facility for processing. Finance Director Randy Scollins said the estimated collection costs in year one of the contract is just under $2.2 million, which is in line with what he had budgeted for FY22 ($2.25M). “Based on current pass-through recycling cost, we have a $50,000 cushion,” he said. “However, those costs will vary, and we may need that cushion.” He added that town officials budgeted just under $200,000 for all other trash-related costs, the largest being composting.
