Vaccine Update: Canton keeping pace with Norfolk County
By Jay TurnerMore than two-thirds of the population of Canton — and nearly 80 percent of all eligible town residents ages 12 and over — have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the latest weekly report put out by the state Department of Public Health.
As of August 12, a total of 15,851 residents had received all of their COVID shots while 17,493 residents had received at least one vaccination dose. Canton has a current population of 23,173, and of that total, 19,997 are eligible to receive the COVID vaccine.
Canton’s overall vaccination rate of 68 percent ranks 11th in Norfolk County, which has a cumulative rate of 66 percent. Among the 28 municipalities in the county, Dover has the highest per capita rate at 83 percent, while Brookline has the lowest rate at 55 percent. Among surrounding towns, Canton has the third highest vaccination rate, behind Westwood (77 percent) and Sharon (72 percent).
When looking only at eligible residents (those 12 and older), Canton’s vaccination rate climbs to 79 percent, which is slightly ahead of the Norfolk County rate of 76 percent.
Among age groups, those who are between 65 and 74 lead the way in Canton with a 91 percent full vaccination rate, followed by the 75 and older group with a rate of 86 percent. Residents ages 16-19 have also heeded the vaccination call in a big way as 83 percent are now fully vaccinated while greater than 95 percent of teens in that grouping have received at least one vaccination dose.
Age groups with the lowest rates to date in Canton include the 12-15 year olds (55 percent fully vaccinated/68 percent partially vaccinated) and those ages 20-29 (69 percent/78 percent).
