Shout out to another Bulldog basketball legend

By

Dear Editor:

I really enjoyed Jay Turner’s recent article which regarded Devin Foster as the “greatest basketball player to ever put on a Bulldog uniform.”

Mike Byrnes

As a CHS alum myself, I am very happy to hear of Devin’s basketball success. More importantly, he seems like a delightful young man who will continue to represent the town of Canton well.

In addition to Devin I would like to submit for honorable mention another CHS basketball legend: Mike Byrnes, Class of 1984.

As a kid I remember watching him play; he was dominant and in my opinion the first CHS basketball great.

Byrnes went on to play for a young John Calipari at UMass Amherst. He also had a very successful coaching career at the Winchendon School, winning two championships in the very competitive NEPSAC league, which has historically produced many NBA players.

Later Byrnes served as an assistant coach at D1 Robert Morris University, where the Colonials completed one of the greatest upsets in NIT tournament history, defeating the University of Kentucky in 2013.

Incidentally that evening the Colonials also spoiled the homecoming of Moon Township’s own and Bynes’ former coach John Calipari.

Again, I really enjoyed the article and will certainly be rooting Devin on at Clemson. Hopefully he will continue to make CHS basketball proud!

Regards,

Damon Coleman
