Man About Canton: What’s Going on Around Us

By

DID YOU KNOW …

The stock market recorded losses for four straight weeks in the month of August. In fact, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had 10 days of more than a 100-point movement up and down (mostly down). If you ask MAC, the U.S. economy is headed toward a recession.

The weak economy is hitting Americans where they spend a lot of their free time — in front of the television, and they are canceling cable TV in record numbers.

Some good news, if you can call it that, is oil prices have been falling over the past four months, and lower prices will likely mean more relief at the gas pump.

Burger King, which has been around since 1955, will be retiring its mascot, the king.

According to a recent survey, salaried workers can expect a modest raise of 2.5 to 2.8 percent in 2012.

The U.S. Postal Service is in big trouble. The demand for paper mail has fallen 20 percent in the last four years, leading to a loss of $8 billion this year. Email is quickly replacing the “letter.”

Judging from all the bumper-to-bumper traffic creeping through Canton on Washington Street, MAC and many others can only surmise that the traffic lights at Neponset Street and at Church Street are a failure. MAC and many others feel that the traffic would move faster through town if these lights were blinking yellow.

Lyricist and popular songwriter Jerry Leiber recently died at age 78 in Los Angeles. He was the man who wrote hit songs that came to define rock and roll in the 1950s. Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Yakety Yak, Kansas City, Charlie Brown and Stand by Me are some of the 15 songs he wrote that became number one hits. The music world lost one of its greatest rock and roll songwriters.

One of MAC’s favorite actors also recently passed away. James Arness, who was better known from 1955 to 1975 as Dodge City U.S. Marshall Matt Dillon in the western series “Gunsmoke,” died on June 3. “Gunsmoke” went on to become the longest-running dramatic series in CBS history. Arness was 88.

The town of Milton will be celebrating its 350th anniversary in 2012. A huge parade is being planned for June 9, 2012. Milton’s town hall is located at 525 Canton Avenue.

Restaurants in Canton that wish to open at 10 a.m. on Sundays and sell alcohol must file an application with the Board of Selectmen.

Randolph has some of the state’s highest foreclosure activity in recent years, with 113 foreclosure auctions in 2010. Randolph also had a large number of short sales in which the lender agrees to sell the property for less than the outstanding mortgage balance.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority recently celebrated the opening of the new $65 million Norwood High School. It is the first school built under the agency’s cost-saving “model school” program.

Edaville Railroad will be open from September through December this year. The 231-acre property is up for sale.

~MICHAEL A. ULIANO DEDICATION~

On Sunday, September 11, 2011, at 8:45 a.m., the Canton selectmen and Veterans Agent Tony Andreotti will unveil a monument at the Canton Corner Cemetery next to the war memorials to honor Michael A. Uliano. Known to friends as Mike “Uli,” he was a former Canton resident and Canton High School football star. He was killed on September 11, 2001, when an airplane hijacked by terrorists struck the World Trade Center in New York where he was working. Family and friends are invited to attend the dedication.
