Open Book Coffehouse kicks off new season Sept. 17

By

The Open Book Coffeehouse will begin its seventh consecutive season of showcasing live, acoustic music on Saturday, September 17, with the Squeezebox Stompers Trio. This band  plays a lively blend of roadhouse roots, blues, cajun, and zydeco music.

The Squeezebox Stompers Trio

Listening to the Squeezebox Stompers is like taking a virtual stroll through the streets of the French Quarter and hearing the sounds of Cajun, zydeco, blues, and swamp pop originals swirling in the sultry air. It’s all very lively and danceable foot stompin’ music drawn from the traditions of American roots music.

The band plays a multitude of instruments, including piano and Cajun accordions, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, acoustic bass, triangle, rub-board, and drums, with the entire band singing lead and harmony vocals. They have two releases — their self-titled trio CD and their upcoming new release, “Rockin’ Ralph’s Roadhouse,” featuring songs from the musical about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and its impact on bar patrons at a roadhouse outside of New Orleans.

As veteran performers for the past 25 years, various members of the band have distinguished themselves as music award winners. Ralph Tufo has won four Boston Music Awards as a former member of the Boogaloo Swamis. Larry Plitt was the 2007 winner of the Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. For the past four years, the band has performed at Mardi Gras dance parties, Cajun dances, coffeehouse concerts, festivals, weddings, parties and functions throughout New England. Among the many positive reviews posted on the band’s website was the following from Habitat for Humanity: “Can we talk about the Squeezebox Stompers? I mean, holy cow! Please pass along our deepest gratitude to your band for bringing us the sounds of New Orleans — people were raving about it! I just wish I could have taped the whole night. You really added that authenticity to our Mardi Gras — you were totally awesome! Thank you!”

Enjoy the relaxing, warm atmosphere of friendly people, good music, hot coffee and homebaked goodies. Admission to the coffeehouse is $10 per person, with a special admission price of $5 for students. The Open Book Coffeehouse is located in the community room of the Canton Public Library at 786 Washington Street and is made possible by the Friends of the Library.
