Shea, Virginia M.
By Canton CitizenVirginia (Gini) M. Shea, 89, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 30, 2021.
Gini was born on August 15, 1932, in Squantum to the late William and Elizabeth Cataldo. Gini graduated from North Quincy High School and Bay State Aviation Academy, and she worked as an executive secretary to the vice president of Northeast Airlines. She excelled in her job and enjoyed traveling to the many cities where Northeast Airlines flew.
While Gini was enjoying her career, she chose a different path when she met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) F. Shea, outside of Remick’s Department store in Quincy one chilly December evening. Their meeting was the beginning of a beautiful union full of love, faith, laughs, and adventures.
Gini married Dick in 1959, and together, along with their deep love and faith, they created a loving family. Besides her husband of 62 years, Gini is survived by her three children and their spouses: Susan M. Sheehy and her husband, Brian Sheehy, Richard F. Shea and his wife, Patricia Shea, and William T. Shea, and his wife, Deborah Shea. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Catherine Hoffmann and her husband, Robert Hoffmann, Kevin Sheehy, Ryan Shea, McKenzie Shea, Brianna Shea, and Brendan Shea. In addition to her immediate family, Gini is survived by her three siblings, Elizabeth Faherty, Joseph Cataldo, and Thomas Cataldo. She is also predeceased by her brother William Cataldo and her sister Barbara Harper. Furthermore, Gini is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Gini had many hobbies throughout her life, including playing tennis, golf, and bridge. She loved watching Patriots games and reading her Kindle. Gini was devoted to her faith and went to Mass every day. She and Dick traveled around the world, but she was happiest either at her home in Canton, or at her cottage on Cape Cod in Brewster. She loved swimming and reading on the beach, and she especially loved spending time with her family, of whom she was completely devoted. Many happy times will be remembered singing in the “dining room” at the cottage, playing bocce, and teaching the grandchildren to swim the “Nana Backstroke” at Linnell Landing Beach.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She never hesitated to help someone in need, and she was as quick to give a hug as she was a quip, all in the name of making the receiver a better person and to feel loved. Gini’s greatest legacy will be the lessons she has passed on to her family — live a life of joy, faith, and fun, and to always remember, family first.
A funeral Mass was held Monday in St. Oscar Romero Parish (formerly St. John the Evangelist) in Canton. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Vincent DePaul, PO Box 265, Canton, MA 02021. Arrangements by the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street.
