CHS students join Team Rival competition

Interim Superintendent of Schools Derek Folan and Canton High School Principal Jeffrey Sperling are pleased to announce that CHS students are participating in Team Rival this school year. This program aims to raise awareness about drug use and addiction, and to promote healthy student choices. Sperling has participated in the past and recommends the value of this program for students.
Launched in 2015 by Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey, Team Rival brings together high schools across the county to compete against their athletic rivals in a friendly year-long competition. Canton High School is joined by 30 other participating high schools. Their bracket includes Stoughton, Sharon and Foxborough high schools.
Teams earn points for their performance in three challenges. The team in each bracket to score the most points receives monetary funds to continue the promotion of positive school culture.
One challenge is called Distractology. This online training educates students on how to become a safer driver by learning to avoid and ignore distractions on the road. The more students that participate school-wide, the more points they earn for their team!
Teams are also challenged to enroll as many students as possible in Shifting Gears: the Blunt Truth about Marijuana and Driving. This online program consists of a video of information about marijuana impairment and driving performance to an audience of teens that are driving or approaching driving age. Students will watch the video and complete a post-video form.
The final Team Rival competition is the TikTok Kindness & Respect Video Challenge. Students will create TikTok videos that depict random acts of kindness and respect.
Last month, a group of CHS students attended the Peer Leadership Conference at Gillette Stadium. The event served to kick off the Team Rival competition by orienting students to the challenges, awarding scholarships, and presenting inspiring local stories of leadership. Canton’s attendance earned the school 25 points and they’ve already gotten started with the remaining challenges.
Team Rival is made possible with support from the Arbella Insurance Foundation, AAA Northeast, the Progeria Research Foundation, the Haley Cremer Foundation, and the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance through a Drunk Driving Trust Fund grant.
Canton students are very fortunate to be part of a community that values and supports its students as much as Norfolk County does. Visit the Norfolk County DA’s website at nfkda.com/peerleadership.html to keep an eye on the Team Rival scoreboard. Good luck Bulldogs!
