Golf team hopeful despite 0-2 start
By Mike BergerDespite losing two close matches, CHS head golf coach Jim Spillane is optimistic that he has a deep, strong team and is hoping that one or two golfers will emerge as the consistent low scorers each match.
The Bulldogs began the season with away losses to Foxboro 171-175 and Oliver Ames 161-166, with the lowest scoring team winning the match.
At Foxboro last week, sophomore Sam Riemer shot a team-best 42 on the par-36 course, followed by junior Rich Nee and senior Cam Goodman, who both shot a 44.
On September 14, Canton opened its home schedule with a match against Oliver Ames and fell by five strokes. Par on the Blue Hill Country Club course is 35, and senior Mike Reardon had the lowest score with a 40, followed by senior Mike Lamir with a 41. Coach Spillane has set 160 or below as the team’s goal for its home matches.
Team captains this year are Lamir, Reardon, and Kevin Marchand. The Bulldogs are coming off a strong season in which they went 8-5 and earned a spot in the Division 2 south playoffs. The team returns two of last season’s top four golfers in Lamir and Marchand.
“I think we have a strong team and our depth is outstanding,” Spillane said. “These kids are a pleasure to coach, and I am optimistic we will have a strong season.”
The Bulldogs have a busy week with a home match against North Attleboro, followed by a match at Stoughton on Wednesday, a home match against King Philip today, and a match at Sharon on Monday, September 26.
