Busy week gives boys’ basketball team chance to get on winning track

By

With three games scheduled this week, the CHS boys’ basketball team will have the chance to get on the winning track. The 1-5 Bulldogs have lost three consecutive games — their most recent a 57-49 loss to Fairhaven.

Fairhaven opened up a 20-12 first quarter lead and never looked back. The visiting Bulldogs were within five (29-24) at the half and cut the deficit to two points four times, but Fairhaven never relinquished the lead.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” CHS coach Mike Devoll said. “We made too many untimely turnovers throughout the game and especially when we made it close.”

Dan Boivert was the high scorer for Canton with 13 points, followed by brothers Colby and Tyler Gavigan with eight and seven points respectively.

Devoll said he is disappointed in the team’ s recent play and is making some changes to inject some spirit and more offense.

One positive note in the Fairhaven game was the play of the reserves, including Colby Gavigan, Scott Levy and Zia Wiggins. All three played well and Devoll said each should see more playing time in the next few games.

“While our defense has been pretty good, except for the Foxboro game, our offense has to improve,” Devoll said. “We need to score more points; we need to run more, not get bogged down in a half-court offense, and cut down our turnovers.”

Canton was scheduled to play Southeastern Voke Monday night, North Attleboro Tuesday night and Stoughton Friday night (in Stoughton). Canton will have a week off after the Stoughton game and then face King Philip at home on Friday, January 15.
