CPL presents Canton Reads 2022

Think how amazing it would be to understand — really understand — the animals we share this Earth with.
No one knows this better than author, naturalist, and adventurer Sy Montgomery, which is why her exciting memoir How to Be a Good Creature is this year’s selection for Canton Reads 2022. Readers might recognize the author — she has written many books about animals and our connection to them, including bestsellers like The Good Good Pig and The Soul of an Octopus.
“We chose this book because of its wide appeal — to men, women and young readers,” said Library Director Andrea Capone. “The 13 stories explore the lives of different animals, but, just as importantly, encourage all humans on the planet to see how animals reflect and amplify our own lives.”
Many copies of How to Be a Good Creature are available to borrow at the library, and the book is also available to purchase on Amazon in hardcover, Kindle and audio versions.
“The whole point of Canton Reads,” explained Community Outreach Librarian Carolyn Elkort, “is to create an opportunity for Canton residents to read the same book at the same time, and then to have the chance to participate in discussions, activities and events together. We hope people will read this upbeat and positive book in February and March, and then enjoy all the activities we’ve planned throughout the month of April.”
Other upcoming events for Canton Reads 2022 include: “Understanding Your Cat,” an informative and fun presentation by certified cat behaviorist Dr. Rachel Geller (April 2); a two-part virtual nature writing workshop led by Mass Audubon’s Kim Hoff (April 6 and 20); “Chickens in the Garden,” a presentation by Gretel Anspach on the ins and outs of raising chickens (April 11); “Giant Ocean Tank Encounter,” a virtual presentation about the New England Aquarium’s largest exhibit (April 20); and an evening with Mississippi Barking author Chris McLaughlin, who will discuss her animal rescue efforts in the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina.
The program wraps up with a virtual visit from the author herself on Wednesday evening, April 27, via Zoom.
Everyone in Canton is encouraged to read How to Be a Good Creature and to take part in as many activities as they can.
“We’re so happy that Canton Reads has become an annual event,” noted Elkort.
“Not only does it get people to read, which is always a good thing; it brings the community together,” added Capone.
